Public databases, academic institutions, and public research organisations are currently exempt from making financial contributions.

However, all users of digital sequence information on genetic resources should share benefits arising from its use in a fair and equitable manner. The multilateral mechanism also introduces provisions on non-monetary benefit sharing as well as new transparency provisions for entities operating databases tools and models that are dependent on DSI and make such information publicly available.
